Deer Building Block Dress

Pattern: Building Block Dress book by Liesl Gibson; variation H

Materials: Yuwa deer fabric (Japanese cotton) for main; Moda polka dot cotton for contrast, Kaffe shot cotton for finishing.

We are so thrilled to be a part of the Oliver + S Building Blocks Dress book tour! If you're not familiar with the book, Building Blocks Dress by Liesl Gibson is a fantastic sewing and alteration guide that uses one bodice block to create a dozen of different dresses! The book guides you step-by-step on how to alter the elements of the pattern to make exactly the dress of your dreams.

There are so many sweet examples in the book, it was hard to choose just one! We ultimately ended up going with Variation H, which includes the basic silhouette and sleeves, front pockets with fold detail, a Peter Pan collar with a button back, and a beautifully finished hem facing.

Michelle whipped this up using one of  Japanese cottons that we carry in store, accented with tiny polka dotted Moda fabric for the collar, cuffs, and pocket contrast. To keep this all-cotton dress clean and simple throughout, she used a Kaffe shot cotton in pale pink for the bias facing and hem facing. All exposed seams are finished with a simple zigzag stitch. The inside looks nearly as beautiful as the outside!

Michelle sewed up a straight size 4 with no alterations, and the finished dress has a great fit! The instructions on the pattern were very easy to understand and follow - even the parts that involved drafting, such as the pockets - and the only change she made was to make the bias facing 1/4" wider so that it was easier to handle.

Real Talk: While I personally don't like to sew clothing for anyone except my adult-sized self, this book has me seriously reconsidering that stance! Or, at the very least - trying to figure out how to make the patterns fit me. There are so so many lovely options in the book, and this particular sample is one of the cutest things I've seen this year!

If you're in Nashville on November 11th, be sure to check out our Building Blocks Child's Bodice half day workshop at Craft South! Liesl will be teaching the basic patternmaking/alteration techniques to develop a unique dress pattern of your own design, working on the girl's bodice. Afterwards, we will have a meet and greet and book signing at Craft South to celebrate the launch of her book! It is going to be a fantastic weekend!
